Title: The analysis of the forest-wood chain in Tuscany. The prospects for the future of the Tuscan timber
Riassunto: Lo studio presentato trae spunto da una recente indagine realizzata sulla filiera foresta legno in Toscana. Obiettivo primario è la ricostruzione dei flussi di interscambio di materiale legnoso tra le imprese di segagione toscane e gli altri comparti della filiera del legno da opera, a livello regionale, extra-regionale ed estero, è stata effettuata realizzando una indagine diretta presso le aziende individuate nella fase di campionamento. I dati necessari allo sviluppo della ricerca sono stati rilevati attraverso la somministrazione di questionari strutturati, costruiti ad hoc per le imprese. Nello studio in base al campione esaminato, viene evidenziato quanto legname è lavorato nella industrie della Toscana, quanto viene esportato e quali quantitativi sono poi invece importati da altre regioni e/o dai mercati esteri. Del materiale acquistato è stata valutata oltre alla quantità, il prezzo e la provenienza, l’eventuale certificazione forestale. Identiche informazioni sono state raccolte anche a proposito delle vendite. Inoltre è stato valutato se è presente nel mercato una richiesta di legname certificato. Una migliore organizzazione del mercato del legno consentirebbe di produrre effetti positivi sia dal lato dell’offerta sia da quello della domanda, consentendo anche una maggiore conoscenza del materiale legnoso disponibile.
Summary: This study was inspired by a recent survey conducted on the forest sector of Tuscany. The main objective of this contribution is the reconstruction of the timber interchanges among the sawmill firms and the other sections of the forest wood chains (FWCs) at regional, extra-regional and foreign level; it was carried out by providing a direct survey in the companies identified in the sampling phase. The data needed for the development of the research were collected through the administration of structured questionnaires, designed specifically for the enterprises. On the basis of these data, the amount of wood processed in the firms of Tuscany, the amount exported and the amount imported from other regions and/or foreign markets was highlighted. The purchased material was evaluated in terms of quantity, price, origin, and, if existing, forest certification. Identical information was also collected for the selling. Moreover, it was also taken into account if in the Tuscan market there is a demand for certified timber. It is evident that the creation of forest market would produce positive effects on the supply side and on the demand side. Such an initiative could increase the value of raw material, favouring the aggregation of demand and a greater knowledge of available wood material.
